Tennis is back baby!
The 2025 Grand Slam season is upon us and here's a quick guide to the slams for beginners
The Grand Slam ie ‘the slams’ as the true tennis fans call them are THE tournaments to watch if tennis is starting to pique your interest or you’re simply interested to see how Taylor Fritz keep his beautiful mane together on match days. There seems to be a million tournaments going on throughout the year but these are the biggies and the ones to start watching! So let’s get into it!
The Details:
Australian Open: Held in January in Melbourne Park in Melbourne
French Open: Held in late May to early June in Roland Garros in Paris
Wimbledon: Held in late June to early July in All England Club in London
US Open: Held in late August to early September in USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City
So mark your calendars: Jan, May, June, August!
The Court Surfaces:
Australian Open: Hard
French Open: Clay
Wimbledon: Grass
US Open: Hard
The Racquet Racket Review:
Australian Open: My least favorite slam to follow because of the time difference between Australia timezone and PST. I usually catch the recaps on ESPN but the players seem to enjoy this location as a start to the official season. This year is rumored to bring the very fun to watch and opinionated Nick Kyrgios back to his home court after an injury hiatus last year.
French Open: Also known as ‘Roland Garros’ but you have to say it with an obnoxious fake French accent. I have perfected mine after a few years of watching it. This by far is the MOST chic tournament and one of my absolute favorites. I am bias to Paris as a city but watching the fits on the court and off the court coverage is one I look forward to every season. The court surface is clay which makes it even more competitive because only a few players can really play well on this type of surface. It will also be the first year without the King of Clay: Rafael Nadal so should leave room for newbies to take the title.
Wimbledon: All the players wears white at this tournament which sounds boring and stuffy. And it is. It’s giving old tennis and we are not really about that…are we? :-) It’s not my favorite to watch because I find the grass surface is not as exciting after watching players on a clay surface at Roland Garros. But it might be considered the most prestigious slam? I only say this because it’s always referenced as “The Championships Wimbledon” on tv. Generally, I watch the final matches in this tournament and also so I can see which royal will be in the box. Remember when Kate and Meghan used to be friends? The 2018/2019 season were sensational for this reason.
US Open: The LAST & BEST major slam of the year! There’s an energy that has been swirling at this slam in the last few years and this is the tournament where I built my love affair with tennis. If you’re interested in watching tennis for the first time, I recommend this tournament 10/10!!! You can feel the energy of the matches through your tv. Really though. Remember the beer girl?
The players always seem more relaxed but extremely competitive and because it’s in NYC, the hours to catch the matches are much more primetime. AND the American players generally take center stage and really bring it because it’s their home turf like Taylor Fritz last year who made a SERIOUS run for the title though I don’t feel like he played his best match.
Each tournament runs for two weeks each so I generally hunker down and watch tennis every second I can and try to not annoy my family & friends for those two weeks. But this season, I’ll be annoying a whole new crop of friends. You. Yeah - you. the one reading this post. :-)
I just got into tennis a couple of years ago and have grown obsessed with the sport. Those in my household keep wondering if the tennis season ever really ends. So far, Roland Garros is my favorite slam, but the US Open is close behind. The "white" of Wimbledon hasn't bothered me yet, but I've also only watched it once.
